PAINT ADVICE

One of the biggest questions we get asked is "What paint should I use on my tiles?" No one wants to graft for hours to create a stenciled masterpiece only for it to chip and peel away. But the truth is the type or brand of paint you decide to use is only part of the puzzle.

  • PREP WORK

    Start by scrubbing your tiles. They need to be squeaky clean. We recommend sugar soap, this will lift any dirt and grime easily, and help the paint grip to your tiles. Lightly sand your tiles for extra grip.

  • PRIMER

    Even if you plan on using a specialist tile paint, it's a good idea to put a coat or two of primer down first. Especially if you are stenciling smooth glossy tiles. Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3 is a firm favourite.

  • TEMPERATURE

    Most specialists paints need the room temperature to be above 10 degrees to fully cure effectively. Something to consider if you're stenciling in winter. You might need to keep the heating on overnight!

  • CURING TIME

    Make sure you read your paint tin to understand the correct curing time and time you need to leave between coats. Slow and steady wins the race!

  • APPLICATION

    Don't be tempted to slap a thick base coat down to save time. 2-4 thin layers are much better and more durable. To save your back and knees take regular breaks and have a cushion to hand.

  • SEALANT

    It's important to protect all of your hard work, 2-3 coats of sealant are definitely recommended. Polyvine is a great choice. Lightly sand between coats for extra durability.
